June Teisan is a National Board-certified teacher who brought science to life for K-12 students on Detroit’s northeast border for 27 years and now designs and delivers vibrant learning experiences for students and fellow teachers across the country.
Dr. Teisan served as 2008 Michigan Teacher of the Year and was one of four finalists for 2008 National Teacher of the Year. She was awarded the White House Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 2005, the National Science Teachers Association 2013 STEM Educator award, and was inducted into the National Teacher Hall of Fame in 2016.
Dr. Teisan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences, a Master of Arts in Teaching Biological Sciences, an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership, and a PhD in Educational Leadership. She was an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow in Washington, D.C. in 2014-2015 in the Office of Education at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is a Smithsonian Educator Ambassador, founding member and past President of the Network of Michigan Educators, Teacher Ambassador with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, former chair of the review panel for the National Science Teachers Association journal Science Scope, STEM Advisory panelist with the National Education Association, and Microsoft Partners in Learning US awardee and global finalist. Dr. Teisan is currently the Education Specialist and School Programs Coordinator at Detroit’s historic Belle Isle Aquarium, serving teachers and students in Detroit.
Dr. Teisan is actively involved in education policy and advocacy efforts at the state and national level. She is passionately committed to widening opportunities for under-represented and under-served students in the STEM fields and is committed to supporting urban and early-career educators with rich, innovative professional development.
