AI Detectives: K-12 Digital Literacy Resources

Published on 11/06/2025

Generative AI is transforming our information landscape and reshaping how students research, write, and learn. To navigate this shift, students need new digital literacy skills—starting with the ability to critique, contextualize, and verify AI outputs.

NCWIT offers the following classroom resources to help educators teach these foundational AI literacy skills to their middle and high school students.

1. AI Detectives: Can You Spot the Flaws? (Poster)

This printable 11×17 poster is a student-friendly resource designed for quick reference in classrooms, libraries, or computer labs. It highlights six common limitations of generative AI models (specifically, large language models like Claude, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini).

The goal is to instill a habit of skepticism and verification, empowering students to be the final authority, not the AI.

2. Student’s Guide to Fact-Checking AI (Handout)

A printable, two-page guide for students. This handout reinforces the concepts on the poster and provides step-by-step instructions on how to fact check with lateral reading. It supplements the necessary awareness of AI’s limits with an actionable workflow.
