Department Head and Professor of Computer Science

Tracy Camp is the Department Head and Professor of Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines. She received a BA degree from Kalamazoo College, an MS degree from Michigan State University, and a PhD degree from the College of William and Mary.

Dr. Camp has received over 20 grants from the National Science Foundation; in total, her projects have received over $20 million dollars in external funding. This funding has produced 12 software packages that have been requested from (and shared with) more than 3,000 researchers in 86 countries (as of October 2012). Her articles have been cited more than 10,000 times (per Google Scholar, as of December 2015). Her current research interests are in the credibility of ad hoc network simulation studies and the use of wireless sensor networks in geosystems (e.g., monitoring earth dams and avalanche paths).

Dr. Camp is an ACM Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, and an ACM Distinguished Lecturer. She has previously served in several roles, e.g., on the Computing Research Association’s Board, as ACM SIGMOBILE Treasurer, and on several editorial boards (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing) and technical programming committees (e.g., MobiCom and MobiHoc). She is currently serving on the ACM Educational Council and on a National Academy Committee on the Growth of Computer Science Undergraduate Enrollments. She is also a member of the CRA’s Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W), and served as its Co-chair from 2011-2014.

Dr. Camp shares her life with Max (born in 2000), Emma (born in 2003), her stay-at-home husband (Glen), and two cats (Sunny and Sparkle). The four humans are vegetarians who tremendously enjoy living in the foothills of the Rockies.
