Provost

Stefanie Tompkins currently serves as the Provost of the Colorado School of Mines, a return to the university where she previously served as Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer.  

Prior to her current role, Dr. Tompkins led the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) from 2021 to 2025.  Her background also includes over a decade in industry, an earlier 12-year tenure at DARPA in various program management and leadership capacities, and service on institutional boards (she currently serves on the RAND Corporation’s Board of Trustees as well as on the board for Elevate Quantum, a Department of Commerce quantum technology hub).  She began her career as a U.S. Army intelligence officer.  

Dr. Tompkins holds an undergraduate degree in geological and geophysical sciences from Princeton University and master’s and doctoral degrees in geological sciences from Brown University.
