October 12-14 // Las Cruces, New Mexico
From Pennsylvania, we’ll head out west where the NCWIT team will take part in ISPCS. This Symposium is a dialog between speakers and the audience that captures the growth and diversification of the global commercial space industry in short powerful talks. NCWIT Research Scientist Brad McClain, as well as Entrepreneurial Alliance and Pacesetters Program Director Jill Reckie will join several sessions, including:

After many years of collaboration, Jonathan Firth of NCWIT Entrepreneurial Alliance Member Virgin Galactic (VG) and ISPCS Curator Pat Hynes saw a need for our industry to expand our behavior to devise ways that we can all embrace a more diverse and inclusive workforce. They created The SUMMIT to enable our industry to be a part of this intentional evolution. Whether you are involved in a startup or work in an established company, the challenges for work teams continue to evolve. We choose to view the challenges as opportunities to grow and continue to improve the way that we do business and interact with each other.

Inspired by the legacy of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, GHC is designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. And once again, NCWIT will be there!

This session will prepare technical recruiters to assess current recruiting and hiring practices and suggest inclusive, research-based approaches for attracting diverse talent. You’ll meet many technical women at GHC who are looking for jobs; let NCWIT help you connect with them and with NCWIT Aspirations in Computing — a program that provides a long-term community for thousands of technically inclined girls and women. - Want to be a Bias Interruptor? // Wednesday, October 19, 2:00 pm – 4:00 p.m. // GRB 360 A
After a short primer on unconscious biases that exist in academia, learn how to become a “bias interruptor” in your classrooms, department meetings, and research labs. (You will have time to practice your new skill with other attendees.) Once you are familiar with being a human bias interrupter, we will turn to software. Yes, software also has biases, which we will learn about in a tech talk. More information about the Academic Corner can be found here.

Then, it’s back to Pennsylvania for SWE Invent IT Build It! SWE, Girl Scouts, WGBH’s Design Squad Global, Techbridge, and the ExxonMobil Foundation have teamed up for the 7th annual Invent It Build It Expo. Visit NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Program Manager Ammi Ludwick at the NCWIT Booth where she will have NCWIT resources for parents, teachers, and students (middle and high school tracks).
